When the Ingalls family first arrived in the village of Walnut Grove, they were outsiders. They lived outside the village proper and had roots in another part of the country. In sharing the beloved stories of her youth, Laura Ingalls Wilder touched on universal feelings of insecurity and vulnerability that come with moving to a new place. During those times the trivial concerns of appearance and social standing can be amplified well out of proportion. By inviting her readers to share in unexpected disappointments like being snubbed or criticized by Nellie Oleson and her mother, we’re able to recognize those feelings. Likewise, as she learns and matures, we’re able identify with her journey in our own personal growth.

Laura and Mary Ingalls empower and help us reassess our own self-worth by putting superficial concerns and perceived shortcomings back into the low priority to which they truly belong and make us all feel welcome. Each new adventure adds dimension and depth to their characters until they emerge as bright, caring young women with indomitable wills and formidable talents.
